Sustainable Water Supply Project

Advancing sustainable water supply for ADNOC’s Onshore Operations

This project is ADNOC’s flagship sustainable water initiative, setting a new global benchmark for water management in the energy sector.

Located in Al Mirfa, Abu Dhabi, it is the world’s largest sulphate removal plant for oil and gas, using advanced ultra- and nano-filtration technology to deliver over 115 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of treated seawater - equivalent to 3.2 million barrels per day.

This vital resource will support ADNOC’s onshore operations at the Bab and Bu Hasa fields, replacing traditional deep aquifer water systems and significantly reducing environmental impact.

About the project

This sustainable water supply project is a strategic partnership between ADNOC and TAQA, and a consortium comprising of Orascom Construction (a leading global engineering and construction contractor), Metito (a global leader and provider of choice for sustainable water management solutions) and Abrdn.

The project features a centralized, world-class seawater treatment plant, water transportation system, and pumping stations, including a 245 kilometer pipeline network, to supply sustainable water for reservoir pressure maintenance.

Fast facts

This project exemplifies ADNOC’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence – future-proofing the company’s operations and supporting the UAE’s transition to a sustainable industrial future. The project - which is due to be commissioned in 2026 - will have the capacity to use 3.2 million barrels of treated seawater per day.
