Our educational investments play a key role in contributing to developing a skilled and diverse UAE workforce. Our academic institutions include the ADNOC Technical Academy, and a series of ADNOC Schools across four locations in Abu Dhabi. We have introduced several initiatives for our students in these institutes, including scholarship programs, youth programs, summer programs and internships.
ADNOC Technical Academy
The ADNOC Technical Academy trains and develops young UAE nationals as operators and technicians for entry to ADNOC. Established in 1978, the academy is the first vocational training institute in Abu Dhabi to develop a skilled national workforce that will meet the demands of the oil and gas sector in the UAE. As part of a phased 30-month program, the trainees undergo on-the-job training at ADNOC’s facilities, providing them with an understanding of the oil and gas industry.
Since its establishment, the ADNOC Technical Academy has trained over 5,200 UAE Nationals.
Founded in 2008, ADNOC Schools provide a challenging and rigorous academic curriculum to gifted Emirati and expatriate students. More than 6,700 students are enrolled in ADNOC Schools, which include one school in the capital city of Abu Dhabi and three schools, in the emirate’s Al Dhafra region, at Ruwais, Madinat Zayed and Ghayathi.
ADNOC ScholarshipsAt ADNOC, we believe students should have access to the world’s leading academic institutions. Established in 1974, the ADNOC Scholarship Program has supported outstanding students in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies, both within the UAE and abroad, across a range of specialized disciplines essential to the advancement of the UAE’s development and economic objectives.
In 2020, we enrolled 20 scholars pursuing various undergraduate and postgraduate programs in technical and engineering disciplines. The year saw 444 scholars graduate, of which 272 were male graduates and 172 were female.
Shaping the Workforce of the FutureADNOC is committed to strengthening the UAE’s efforts to create a sustainable and competitive knowledge-based economy. In support of the nation’s socio-economic development plans, we have introduced educational programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). STEM skills are critical to ensuring students are prepared for the jobs of the 21st century. We believe our focused investments in STEM initiatives will help nurture the next generation of skilled and globally competitive workers who will be the driving force of the UAE’s economy. Our STEM programs are aligned with the national strategic priorities set out in the UAE Vision 2021 and Centennial Plan 2071. This also resonates with ADNOC’s 2030 growth strategy and our social responsibility to develop local talent. Between 2017 and 2021, we have launched numerous STEM initiatives, with almost 7,400 students and more than 950 teachers taking part in these programs.
Emirati Coder ProgramADNOC in partnership with the social initiative ‘Sandooq Al Watan’, has extended the ‘Emirati Coder’ program to the Al Dhafra region. This program supports the development of coding and artificial intelligence skills among young UAE nationals. Since 2018, 3,993 students have graduated from the program with 25% of the students from the Al-Dhafra region being supported by ADNOC.
Kumon MethodIn 2018, ADNOC signed an agreement with the Japan Oil Development Company Co. Ltd and the Kumon Institute of Education to pilot the highly successful Kumon Method of learning mathematics at ADNOC Schools.
In 2020, we expanded the program to pilot the transition and introduction of an app designed specifically to support students in continuing their Kumon education at home. Through a videoconferencing platform, students were provided with structured support and guidance by the Kumon staff to ensure their successful progress.
Almost 4,000 students from seven schools in the UAE benefited from the online program during the 2019-2020 academic year.
ADNOC-Bloomberg Education Initiative
Our four-year partnership with the UAE Ministry of Education and Bloomberg aims to equip young people with specialized financial skills to navigate global capital markets and commodities trading. The initiative strengthens ADNOC’s commitment to making Abu Dhabi a global commodity training hub and develops the foundational components of a sustainable trading ecosystem and talent pipeline for ADNOC’s trading unit.
100 Bloomberg terminals have been installed at five leading Abu-Dhabi universities, where students learn how to analyze real-time financial data. During the pandemic, the ADNOC-Bloomberg Education Initiative converted terminal licenses to Bloomberg Anywhere licenses for university professors at all five universities, enabling teaching professors to access the terminals remotely and integrate them into the e-learning curriculum.
Around 4,000 students were able to remotely access the terminals and approximately 563 students have completed the certification by the end of 2020.
Yas in Schools
‘Yas in Schools’ is a five-year collaboration with Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management that offers schools project-based STEM learning where students, aged 8 to21, learn essential engineering skills in a fun and innovative environment. The initiative uses the world of Formula 1 to excite and engage students in STEM learning and their teachers with easy to adopt themed programs and resources delivering a broad range of learning outcomes.
The initiative features several programs such as ‘F1 in Schools’, a global multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyze, manufacture, test, and then race miniature cars made from a Formula 1 model block.
The initiative also features ‘Formula Ethara’, which means ‘excite’ in Arabic, where children compete in a challenge to develop a model race car made from paper card and test their cars on the ‘Formula Ethara’ Race Track. To ensure the continuity of our STEM initiative during the pandemic, we developed the #EtharaAtHome program to support online delivery of the ‘Yas in Schools’ curriculum.
