Environment & Sustainability

ADNOC takes a proactive approach towards environmental protection, constantly assessing and actively managing all environmental risks and impacts.

We recognize the responsibility we have towards our environment, and place great emphasis on the identification and mitigation of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) risks. Each of our businesses are required to pass a stringent Health, Safety and Environmental Impact Assessment (HSEIA), and are subject to continuous environmental monitoring.

We invest significantly in environmental projects, and continue to take steps to reduce flaring and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. We are also responsible for a series of marine protection and development projects, including mangrove and seagrass plantation, coral reef rehabilitation, and the deployment of artificial reef and fish habitat structures.

In line with the UAE’s commitment to manage the risk of climate change, we are also researching and developing a series of breakthrough projects and technologies, such as Al Reyadah - our joint venture with renewable energy pioneer Masdar - which focuses on exploring and developing commercial-scale projects for carbon capture, usage and storage. Al Reyadah’s first project, with Emirates Steel Industries, will utilize and sequester 800,000 tons of CO2 each year.

ADNOC has recorded its Health, Safety, and Environment Performance since 1997 and, since 2009, has published annual Sustainability Reports. These reports help to chart the company’s progress and improve its HSE performance.
